A Foundation for Growth Mindset, Analytical Compatibility, Creative and Critical Thinking

Montessori encourages a growth mindset and risk-taking are encouraged. Longtime Montessori students generally have strong self-awareness, self-acceptance, and social skills. The benefit of learning with concrete materials is demonstrated most powerfully in higher education when students commonly demonstrate a seemingly innate understanding of advanced math, analytical capacity, creativity, and critical thinking.

Benefits of Practical Life

Through our practical life area, children learn how to care for themselves, take care of their classroom environment, food preparations and wonderful grace and courtesy lessons. These lessons support the development of executive functioning as each child learns time management, multi-step activities, and problem solving skills. The children learn through purposeful lessons which builds confidence and promotes independence.

Benefits of Sensorial

Sensorial experiences begin right when a child is born. Children use all their senses in order to study their environment. By participating in sensory activities, children can consciously and unconsciously absorb clear information that helps them classify and make sense of their surroundings. Sensorial lessons in our Montessori classrooms help children differentiate which in turn broadens and refines the child’s senses. When the child combines Montessori materials with sensorial work, they become more logical, perceptive, and aware of the world around them. Sensorial lessons prepares the child’s mathematical mind.

Why Montessori Teaches Mathematics This Way

Dr. Montessori believed that learning by manipulating objects and learning through the senses creates stronger connections in the brain.

Math gives children visual and tactile representations of the numbers they are working with. Our mathematics program begins with the identification and comparison of size using the sensorial materials. Children then learn the names and symbols of numbers, correspond the symbols to quantities, and subsequently count into the thousands. Children add and subtract, skip-count for multiplication, and perform simple division. Geometry and fractions are introduced from an early age.

Language

Practical life and Sensorial areas lay a strong foundation for the language area. The language area encompasses oral, reading and writing lessons. Children learn oral language naturally and automatically from the classroom environment. The child learns the phonetic sounds of each letter by tracing the sandpaper letters. This leads the child to build and read words and is introduced to writing.

Cultural

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that we are children of the world. A key component of the philosophy is respecting other cultures and experiencing their diversity. The more we understand each other, the more we can cultivate peace.

At Karter Montessori, we are raising “children of the world”, we do this by educating the children about the people, languages, traditions, celebrations, food, music and more from around the globe.

Healthy Eating
Friends. Family. Food!

At Karter Montessori, We offer a rainbow of foods that offers the highest possible standard in nutrition for our children.

We believe that good food brings everyone together. Our students plant and harvest fruits and vegetables in the school garden. Preparing and serving food in the Montessori environment is a way to cultivate a sense of community and friendship. Teachers sit and eat with the children during lunchtime modelling healthy eating habits and  table etiquette.

We are committed to providing healthy meals and snacks. Our goal is to help children develop healthy habits for a healthy future.
